A tennis match with an invisible ball, as in Antonioni’s Blow Up… No.7 Cherry Lane demands that we let ourselves be carried away by its delicate oscillations, the trajectory of a ball flying over Hong Kong, from the filmmaker’s eminently subjective, intimate, cinephile, literary and erotic point of view. We are in 1967, the year of the uprisings that later led to the Maoist demonstrations against British colonial rule. We are in 1967, the year when the handsome literature student Ziming falls in love with a mother and her daughter: Mrs Yu, a forty-year-old exile from Taiwan, and the young Meiling whom Ziming tutors and introduces to novels such as Jane Eyre. As a film of intersections that draw their power from the intensity of crossings and fleeting encounters, No.7 Cherry Lane is Yonfan’s first film in ten years and his first animation film. It is also the first animation film to compete in the Festival des 3 Continents. AR
