Comprising two independent stories linked by a door, Nunca abras esa puerta is already a kind of follow-on to Si muero antes de despertar (1952) adapted by Carlos Hugo Cristensen from the same William Irish (Cornell Woolrich) the same year. The film is doubtless the most perfect example of the expertise acquired by the filmmaker from the thirty or so film he made less than fifteen years. In this film noir at the intersection of many influences, the Christensen’s stamp never involves following in the steps of models, here American, but rather pushing with insolent freedom the search for his own style. Supported by the remarkable photography of Pablo Tarbenero, the drawn-out suspense of unexpected yet regular situations leaves a lasting impression on the spectator. A masterpiece. JB
