In Nocturnes, a young scientist’s gaze on the world and the gaze of the filmmakers accompanying her exploration converge towards the same patience, the same rigour and, above all, the same sense of wonderment. Deep in the dense forests of the eastern Himalayas, she is studying moths and stretches out a large, illuminated screen on which insects of all sizes, colours and shapes come to rest. With her team members, who like us discover this fascinating work method, she selflessly travels along deserted roads and small humid valleys to set up her white screens. But it is not the theoretical underpinnings of a mise en abyme that sustain the film – rather the organic, magnetic, even extraordinary deployment of its shots. Splendidly framed, well-paced and sound-edited, Nocturnes vibrates and stridulates in harmony with the secret world it reveals. FM
