Kijima, a veteran of World War II, is still blaming himself for leaving his fellow soldier the Kanayama on front, southern island, to die. Even though Kijima came back alive, the air raid killed his family. In desperation he became a gangster, but now he is leading a quiet life. One day, Tamio Ito, a veteran-fellow, visits him and invites him to the soldiers’ reunion, which Kijima never wanted to attend. Tamio Ito tells him this is going to be the last reunion and that Yuriko, Kanayama’s grand-daughter, will join them. Another veteran fellow, Heihachi Murata is running a small pub with his wife, Shizue. They are childless, argue sometimes, but are dependent on each other. Seriously ill, Shizue is looked after by Yuriko who works as a nurse. On the reunion day, Kijima finally shows up: it is the first time he agrees to attend the reunion. He brings Yuriko her grandfather’s harmonica. It lost the original shape when Kijima got shot in the war. It was the harmonica that saved him. Yuriko’s boyfriend finds a job with a strange organisation which will link the destinies of all the characters…
