Oultougan is a young woman who lives in a village by the Aral Sea, a sea that is slowly disappearing. The monotonous village life, the gradual degeneration of the villagers including the men who become alcoholics, the rusting ships lying on the sand – such is the daily reality displayed under Oultougan’s eyes. Loneliness and deevastation lead her to almost commit suicide, but she then falls in love with Captain Maydan and starts having an interest in life again. However, suffering will cross Oultougan’s way once more.
