In 1940s Hong Kong, during World War II, Our Time Will Come paints a factual portrait of the resistance fighters and their struggle against the Japanese occupiers. Without neglecting the project’s commercial reality, Ann Hui gives her attention to the war effort made by ordinary people rather than adding a spectacular dimension. By relying essentially on this tension, she gives the resistance its natural, working-class character and finds something even more essential to embody it in the character of a teacher who is to become one of its emblematic figures.
