Shortly after the establishment of the Republic of China, the country falls under military control and is disputed by different factions. Tsao Wan is a warlord’s daughter but secretly belongs to a revolutionary group. In a vast game of disguises, masks and chance, she helps to overthrow the regime. At the Peking Opera she meets two other women who become part of the revolt despite themselves. One of the heights of Tsui Hark’s filmography, the film starts out with portraits, then heads off towards a revolutionary and feminist history of China. MM
