Of the three films I’ve made so far, Elippathayam is the one that’s closest to me. This is not only because the film faithfully reflects my own economic and social environment, but also because the characters portrayed are modelled on people I have known intimately. Above all, it’s the story of Unni’s inability to adapt to the demands of a changing world. And the film tells the story of painful but inevitable change. I tried to highlight an attitude, a state of mind. A series of departures punctuate the storyline: trapping is followed by liberation. The first three involve the rats, and the other three the inhabitants of the old house. I gave the film a very simple setting, because I want viewers to enter without hesitation.
