Mai, a student at the performing arts school in Hanoi, is chosen to play the part of a resistance fighter in a film about the Vietnam war. Committed and convincing, she falls for the film director. But no doubt what appears to bring them closer also raises the question of a misunderstanding between generations. The title could then hold a double meaning for 1990s youth, revealing how hard it is to write one’s own history whilst freeing oneself from the stories of the past. No film had yet engaged in this thought process so clearly, by inviting cinema itself to reflect upon its history and its role. JB
