Twelve years after Mental (2008), Kazuhiro Soda picks up again with Dr. Yamamoto, who in the 1960s pioneered the movement to open the doors of psychiatric hospitals. Now aged 82 the practitioner is on the eve of his retirement, giving final affectionate advice to some of his patients, reassuring those who worry about how they will be followed in the future. This is also the concern the elderly doctor and his wife Yoshiko, as they now need to learn to be a couple again and walk hand in hand towards a new life that they know is nearing its end. Yoshiko, who has been Yamamoto’s most precious support over the years, is suffering from dementia. The Professor’s compassion will now be devoted to his wife. Loving and caring. JB
