Heralded by critics as one of the finest Mexican films, Victims of Sin explores the underworld of Mexico City nightlife. Cabaret dancer Violeta (Ninón Sevilla) rescues the new-born child that her co-worker Rosa has been forced to abandon by her pimp-lover Rodolfo. She decides to care for the infant alone, but this gets her fired and she turns to prostitution in order to look after the child. She meets Santiago, the manager of another nightclub, who offers her a job, then marries her. But Rodolfo is just out of prison… A sensual, hot-blooded dancer with a tender heart, Violeta belongs to the heroines of the cabaret melodrama, a genre whose roots are in a current of Mexican cinema infused with Cuban music and dance. The bewitching Ninón Sevilla gives as much enjoyment to the spectator watching her as she herself takes dancing. Photography by Gabriel Figueroa (Eisenstein, Ford, Huston, Buñuel…).
