Rabi, a five-year-old child, lives in a small village on a plateau in Burkina Faso. Flis father is a blacksmith and bis mother a potter, and together they proudly pass on their artisan traditions to their children, traditions which are both technological and spiritual. Since Pusga, their elderly next-door neighbour, lost his wife, Rabi has helped to look after him, and the two have grown very close. One day, Rabi’s father brings borne a tortoise which slowly becomes a symbol for the child, almost as if it were an instrument through which he can empirically relate to liberty and a deep respect for life. Pusga’s non-conformist views give Rabi a new outlook on life. Although Pusga is in the twilight of his years, he still accepts to dream of a différent world in which it is possible for man to form a new pact with the nature that surrounds him.
