A long, night-time sequence-shot, the camera just above ground level, leads us to a ballet of flash-lights searching in the dark: villagers are busy looking for cicadas, watch for the sporadic and rare appearances made by these insects that live burrowed in the ground and that they make a well appreciated snack of. Despite his night blindness and his childish innocence, Kasan is the witness who guides us into the forest of mysterious events that happen in the village: unexplained disappearances and a worrying religious prophecy. Each of Rapture‘s scenes, Dominic Sangma’s superb second feature-film inspired by childhood memories, is literally a microcosm: a whole world as well as everybody is contained in the smallest gleam. And from the strange nights spent in the small village in North East India arises a parable about the fear and violence that traverse all societies. AR
