Wei is a medicine salesman from an inland province working in Guangzhou. He spends his time going to hospitals and pharmacies to sell his goods. He lives in Kecun Street, a “village within a city” where there are many hair salons where pretty girls offer shampooing, massages and sexual services. In one such salon Wei meets Xiu, who is new to the city. Gradually they get to know one another, but before long, Wei has to take a business trip to another province, and loses touch with Xiu. Xiu’s circumstances take a turn for the worse when she gets laid off from her work, and she ends up a street prostitute.
