The carefree peasant Quim, or ‘Caipira’, lives deep in the state of Sao Paulo. He feels the need to move, driven by a nagging but unfulfilled obsession: eating beef. During his wanderings in love, he meets a young peasant girl who, sensing his secret aspirations, urges him to marry her by making him believe in the existence of an imaginary ox. Despite a happy union, his obsession leads him to meet the devil, and to make a disastrous entry into the big city.
