A harrowing journey through the ‘sertuo’ of the Brazilian north-west in the 1940s. Sargento Getulio, a police sergeant, is tasked with transporting a political enemy from his superior to a coastal town. It is this never-ending journey that forms the whole story, and even turns into an odyssey. An order arrives from the capital to interrupt the journey because the political situation has changed. But Getulio doesn’t give up. His prisoner has become his personal enemy, and Getulio sees the continuation of his journey as the only meaning of his existence.
