Retono, a high school girl, lives a frugal life with her parents and her younger sister Inten in the village of Cilacap in Central Java. They make a living by selling petrol to the villagers. Retono and her childhood sweetheart Ganjar are engaged, but Ganjar leaves the village to look for his older brother who is wanted by the Police. Meanwhile, upon the recommendation of Joko, the richest man in the village, Retono decides to go and work in the city with her sister. But the jobs they had expected turn out to be prostitution and they escape. Yet they prefer to try and make a life for themselves in the city rather than go back to the village.
