Far from the crowds in the business district, a young homeless artist tries to earn a living by sketching the portraits of passers-by. One evening, after witnessing the murder of a man in a side street, he immediately rescues the dead man’s daughter in the hope of finding the mother. So begins a poetic and unexpected epic in the labyrinth of New York. Reconnecting with Charlie Chaplin’s emblematic film The Kid (1921), Sidewalk Stories revives the fundamental value of the melodramatic tonalities that underlie a considerable swathe of slapstick cinema, and anchors its fable in reality itself.
