The singer-actress Malak wants to be loved for who she is. Bruised by her divorce, she succumbs to the charms of a social climber, Lamey. Her screenwriter and director both try to separate her from the man who is jeopardising her career. They make him believe that Malak’s fortune will go to her daughter…Here, Chahine finds his most unbridled expression and takes the liberty of travelling freely between a very Hollywoodian efficiency, a tragicomedy with Molière-like tones and the joyous Cairene chaos. To celebrate his seventy-fifth birthday, Chahine treats himself to a film that is akin to a fountain of youth, reminding us with delightful insolence that his lifelong battle against stupidity and intolerance necessarily means not taking oneself (too) seriously.
