Simon, a holy man, has been doing penance by fasting on top of a pillar in the middle of the desert for the last six years. The devil offers temptation indifferent forms : a pretty country girl, a schoolgirl, a naked old woman. Simon is maligned by a monk who accuses him of eating in secret, but the monk has an attack and dies suddenly. The devil reappears disguised as the Good Shepherd, but he does not manage to fool Simon. After being wounded by a stone thrown at him by the devil, Simon decides to continue doing penance standing on one leg only. The devil returns in the form of a woman and travels with Simon to New-York, where Simon takes on the role of a bored modern intellectual. The devil takes the part of a woman dancer who executes a closing dance entitled «Radioactive Flesh».
