Fergus O’Connell, an itinerant Irish dentist, provides free dental treatment in Patagonia for the ‘Eternal Smile New Jersey’ company. When Estelle, the daughter of a local mechanic, hides in his sidecar to go with him, he can’t get rid of her. In a bar, he protects her from two gangsters, performing a successful operation on their boss, and ends up taking her on as his assistant. As they travel through Patagonia, he explains the mysteries of dentistry to her, while Estelle becomes increasingly attached to him. When ‘Eternal Smile’ stops sending him money, Fergus clashes with the local authorities, who revoke his licence to practise. After he secretly operates on an old monk, Celeste is asked to examine the workers at Celeste’s ranch. To Estelle’s despair, he allows himself to be seduced by Celeste, but comes to his senses and leaves the ranch to continue his mission. On Christmas Day, Fergus calls his wife: the ‘Eternal Smile…’ company is no longer interested in people and an unknown man answers the phone. Estella brings him champagne, but Fergus is already drunk after watching a television programme about the latest Japanese innovation in mobile dental equipment. When his drunkenness has worn off, they make love and, having regained his optimism, Fergus asks her to go back with him.
