Who is Marnie – she appears like a ghost from the abandoned mansion overlooking a marsh in the beautiful region of Hokkaido, where Anna, a timid schoolgirl, has come to cure her asthma? Instead of resting, Anna prefers to linger around the mansion, captivated by its mysterious resident. A ghost from the past or a figment of her imagination, can Marnie bring Anna – who has just discovered that her foster mother was paid to take care of her – the love that she so desperately seeks? The director of Arrietty propels his heroine into a gothic tale, playing on the temporal paradoxes, on the wind and tides, to serve the great transformation that takes hold of the adolescent. FM
