Umeko supports her family by working as abarmaid in a seedy joint. Despite her hard life, she is always happy and strong. The other members of the family treat her badly, including her own daughter Takeko, because of her way of life. One day, a visiting relative rapes Takeko. The refurbishment of the district causes the closure of the bar. Umeko asks Tatsuoka, a former lover and a yakuza, for advice. He betrays her. Takeko insults her mother and leaves the house.
