The film is based on three events that took place in Thailand in the 1930s :
– the assassination of several farmer leaders (36 were killed in 1979 alone),
– strikes in several textile factories in Om Noi, Samutsakorn province, around 1975, when many workers supported industrial action for better wages and working conditions,
– emigration from the Northeast to Bangkok.
Manop Udomej has rewritten these events for his film and added some details from the actual story of a group of farmers in Yasothorn province.
