Practical exercises? An autobiographical fiction? Introspective cooking? What do a man and woman do to hold out together? To hold out together when changes in the world around them seem chaotic and impact them to the point where the world seems to lose its colours? Producer of Qiu Jiongjiong’s impressive fresco, A New Old Play (2021 International Competition), Su Qiqi is now director and rather than searching for answers to these questions, she makes a personal film of an interior space, as intimate as a bathroom, a miniature that blends fact and fiction in the life of a couple of intellectuals (a truly blind spot in Chinese cinema) against the backdrop of their country’s post- pandemic period.
