This well-known Dream of the Red Chamber is the most famous film adaptation of the last of the four great novels of classical Chinese literature written by Cao Xueqin at the very end of the 18th century. It is also one of the last manifestations of the popular genre, huangmai diao (now replaced by kung-fu films), to which Li Han-hsiang made a key contribution. Two remarkable Taiwanese stars, Sylvia Chang (Lin Daiyu) and Brigitte Lin (Jia Paoyu) top the bill, the second playing a masculine role, which went on to become a speciality of her career. JB
