A strange trajectory indeed that of The Emperor and the Minister. As in the The Kingdom and The Beauty (3 Continents, 2014), the emperor leaves the closed world of his court and sets out to discover his people. But Li Han-hsiang offers him a detour that leads him close to the Dragon Inn, the celebrated film of his fellow director Ling Hu. While Hong Kong cinema was expert in the art of remaking its own productions, Li Han-hsiang here suggests an exhilarating alternative: a merging. JB
