1968. It’s summer in Nagasaki. 14-year-old Shizuko lives in a modest apartment with her mother, who runs a cabaret, and with her younger sister. Shizuko is intent on becoming a Manga designer. Her father, whom she adored, abandoned the family three
years earlier. One day, she meets Ryoji, her mother’s boyfriend. He insists on being addressed as “Father” and won’t tolerate even the slightest breach of etiquette. To top it all, Ryoji bas a reptilian look which he directs regularly at his pubescent “daughter” and
forbids her to design Mangas. When Shizuko has the misfortune of getting herself pregnant by a local boy, Ryoji is furious and he punishes her by forcing her to have sex with him. Shizuko’s mother pretends not to be aware of the situation and becomes
jealous of her daughter. Shizuko suffers in silence. She retreats into an imaginary world in which she has created a boy in the image of her father. Each time Shizuko resists her stepfather’s tyranny, the boy changes into a giant insect to support her. How long will Shizuko’s silence last ?
