In a setting reminiscent of the Western, which seems to persist in this arid region, four white men in town attire wait in the shade of an almost ruined house. In front of them, a young black boy is also waiting, timidly, next to an ailing horse soon to be put down. In a circular rhythm that smacks of Beckett’s theatre, time is sliced up by shots as forceful and dry as the desert that inhabits it. This tension is accentuated by the characters’ gazes and silence and makes this « allegory of the South», as the filmmaker describes it, into a real (almost) silent tale, as much as a raw and outright defence plea.
