The Island of Contenda

Under the magnitude of the volcano, the traditionnal society is changing. The old aristocraty, owner of the land as well as of the local trade, and support of the power, is beginning to fall apart. It arises a class of mulattos which economic power lays mainly on trade. Slowly a new identity is born, a combination of old and new, of African and Portuguese culture, of an intense sensuality and extremely careful of their skin.
