Produced by Raj Kapoor and directed by Radhu Karmakar (cinematographer on six of his ten films) who suggested the idea to him, the film was in preparation shortly after Nargis announced following her marriage to actor Sunil Dutt, that she no longer wanted to act with Kapoor. At a loss, he wondered if he could consider making a film with another actress. Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai was thus the first film he produced and starred in without Nargis, but also his last in black and white. An extraordinary work of transition, based on real events (a politician and humanist advocate appeal for the peaceful surrender of groups of hardened bandits that plague the countryside), the film is also a magnificent promise.
