Taiwanese Chen Hung-I, a leading figure for a whole generation of national filmmakers still searching for new inspiration, makes use of the climate surrounding the latest 2016 presidential elections in Taiwan – which brought to power the first woman President in the country’s history – to weave a sophisticated and luminous political pamphlet. The main plot involves a woman’s murder in front of a painting by a vicious artist and opens the door into a frank accusation against a modern society that is subservient to technocracy and capitalism. What drives Cheng is Art: painting of course, but also photography, cinema and classical music (a superb sound track). As his narrative progresses, he asserts these art forms as prisms of protest and people’s empowerment. This film took part in the Taipei Produire au Sud workshop (Taiwan) in 2015. GM
