Although The Legend of The Owl was not produced by Shaw Brothers, David Chiang, one of the studio’s big stars, found here in front of and behind the camera, while his elder brother, Paul Chun, appears in the cast and Derek Yee, their younger brother, provided the script. A family affair and martial arts comedy that even takes a shot at the genre it refers to. This Legend of The Owl is a far-fetched story, as crazy as it is delightful and together with Drunken Master (1978, by Yuen Woo-ping with Jackie Chan) can be seen as a precursor of the mo lei tau style (literally, a style “that makes no sense”) which later brought fame to Stephen Chow (Crazy Kung Fu or Shaolin Soccer).
