This adaptation of an opera from southern China (huangmei) is a classic of Chinese cinema, recounting the tragic love story of two youngsters in bygone times. Zhu Yingtai disguises herself as a young man to go and study at a boys’ school. There, she meets and befriends Liang Shanbo. Li Han-Hsiang, assisted by King Hu, uses his camera to film a musical and choreographic narrative in a setting reminiscent of ancient Chinese paintings. All the roles were played by women and the two lead actresses, Ivy Ling Po (Liang Shanbo) and Betty Loh Ti (Zhu Yingtai), immediately shot to fame. AK
