Derek Yee’s first film, The Lunatics, is a daring film that confronts our readings of Hong Kong cinema and a society with its mirage. Likewise, it casts its actors against type and Stanley Fung in the role of a social worker on the brink of a breakdown gives surely one of his best performances, alongside Deannie Yip, the impulsive journalist, and Dennis Cham, his already resigned colleague. The same goes for the appearances of superstars Chow Yun-fat and Tony Leung Chiu Wai, as if, in order to draw attention to the reality of conditions of homeless people with mental disorders, each of us took a sidestep, and put on the uncomfortable suit of someone else.
