Five years after Kenji Mizoguchi, Li Han-hsiang proposed his own version of the tragic life of Emperor Xuanzong’s favourite concubine (in the mid-Tang dynasty, 618-907). Yang Yuhan, better known as Yang Kwei-fei, was one of the four great beauties of ancient China. Her passionate relationship with the Emperor and the joy they both found in the pleasures of music and dance arouse the court’s intense disapproval. She was finally forced to commit suicide in front of his eyes. The film gained two awards at Cannes in 1962. JB
