As a producer attentive to nascent films, Derek Yee has given a helping hand to several young directors. This is the case with Nick Cheuk’s noteworthy debut feature film – a hit with public and critics alike and widely distributed in Asia following its 2023 release in Hong Kong. A restrained and precise drama that confronts Hong Kong society with one of its repressed and most damning taboos: the suicides of young and sometimes very young people due to pressure from school and family. The resurfacing of a young teacher’s painful memories is supported by skilful writing that calls on bold narratives and finesse in the attention given to its characters. FM
