In Papua New Guinea the word “Tinpis ” has two meanings. It’s the national dish, a sort of mackerel served with heaps of steaming rice. And it’s the “bush-taxi”, the only public transport. In the story, Papa becomes the owner of his taxi thanks to the insurance money from an accident. A dignitary in his highland tribe, from a generation which had the first contacts with “civilisation”, Papa feels obliged to Naaki, a city kid who helped at the time of the accident. He offers Naaki his daughter Joanna, and a share in the taxi business. The two young people are against the idea of an arranged marriage. The partnership of Papa, rooted in his native traditions, ans Naaki whose allegiance is to the modern world,, reveals much about the complex reality of today’s Papua New Guinea – seen from the bush-taxi.
