Losing hope because of his grandson’s illness, Eufemio, a peasant, steals a pearl from a statue of St. Lucy in the village church. Tourists took photos of the theft and Eufemio is about to be killed by his neighbours. The lost pearl had been eaten by a pig belonging to Chabela, Eufemio’s wife. Thomas saves Eufemio but the pearl remains lost.
