Taipei as this century comes to an end. One day, Fong makes the chance acquaintance of a mysterious young woman. Tan, who turns out to be the mistress of Chao, a big business magnate who bas been wading through the troubled waters of the political mafia. Fong is as fascinated by this woman’s distress as he is by the affluent milieu to which she belongs. Tan, for her part, is irresistibly attracted to Fong’s innocence, which, she believes, has not been tainted by the evil of the city. Tan decides to engineer her own kidnapping in such a way as to escape Chao’s grasp profitably. But the plan goes awry. The gangsters she bribes turn out to be greedier that she thought. Chao, believing she has betrayed him, takes his revenge by killing anyone and everyone even distantly associated with the incident. Fong is caught in these bloody reckonings and sinks into “the dark abyss” of the city.
