A television documentary film commentator, Mr. Moddaber, accidentally sees images of his wife, Kian, with a stranger, and begins to suspect her. Xian can’t understand the change in her husband’s behavior. In reality, she is preoccupied with her parents’ illness and pays little attention to Moddaber’s problems. Moddaber is looking for the stranger and never stops watching his wife. After meeting this stranger, and noticing Kian’s unexpected absences and secrecy on the telephone, Moddaber’s suspicions grow all the stronger. But little by little, he discovers that it’s not his wife’s parents who are ill, but she herself, who is desperately searching for something whose roots lie in the distant past. Mr. Moddaber doesn’t give up his search until, finally, he is confronted with a new image of reality.
