Puwal is a boatman in Nemuguri, a small village on the banks of the Dihing river in Assam. The fact that there is no bridge means that Puwal is sure of making a living. His family bas worked the same job for three generations, but Puwal would like to end this tradition as be knows there is no future in taking people from one side of the river to the other. His eldest son, Hemanta, has already found work in the city. Puwal lives with one of his orphaned grand children, Hkhuman, and saves all the money he can to give the boy a better education. Everything is going fine until rumours start saying that they are going to build a bridge, meaning that Puwal would no longer have a job.
