In the 1930s in Shanghai, Luo Wen, a writer, leaves his wife and daughter for a prostitute, Huilan. driven by necessity, Luo’s wife, Suyun, goes to the countryside to teach. While Luo lives in bliss, Huilian steals from hi ans escapes with another man. Beset by creditors, Muo falls apart. Hearing about his situation, Suyu writes a novel under hers husband’s name and tells the story of his life. With the money earned from the book, she can pay his debts. Moved and repentant, Luo Wen goes back to his family.
