One Evening After the War could be a film noir were it not set on the twilight of a war that is followed by the nights of the film’s tragic young heroes, a bar girl and a discharged soldier. After Rice People’s villagers, this urban portrait of a youth living on borrowed time recounts the passionate love of two youngsters without hope and their wanderings in the streets of Phnom Penh. Selling their bodies, or what is left of them, prostitution or boxing matches, is no more than a continuation of war in another form, where one risks one’s life in order to save it. JB
