In a remote region of Bengal, Balaram and Nimai are the signalman and the gateman at a desolate rail station. They endlessly pursue their passion for wrestling. A padre, whose only family is Matthew, an adopted seven-year-old tribal boy, takes care of local Christians. Cracks start to appear in this seemingly serene world. Balaram gets married to Uttara and this forms a wedge in the friendship between the two men. Three Hindu extremists kill the padre, rape and kill Uttara and a dwarf who tried to protect her, while Balaram and Nimai wrestle to destroy each other. The film ends in hope when Matthew, rescued from the extremists by dancers, finds someone to care for him.
