In our latitudes, the name of Kailasam Balachander is rarely mentioned. Yet, he is one of those Indian filmmakers whose importance merits our full attention. Having made some hundred films in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu and Kannada and revealed many actors, he constantly explored unconventional paths but achieved count- less box-office successes. A keen analyst of urban petit-bourgeois morals, but also attentive to social realities, Balachander always managed in his films to give pride of place to women struggling to find their place in a patriarchal society. Thaneer Thaneer remains one of his emblematic films. JB
