Enlightenment is an initiatory process, a turning point between childhood and maturity. A very young boy receives the knowledge designed to allow him to master the forces around him, knowledge the Bambaras have always passed on from generation to generation. The father cannot accept to see his son become his equal. The mother sends young Nianankoro away in order to protect him from his father’s murderous insanity. The little boy gradually acquires elements of ultimate knowledge and new powers which will inevitably confront those of his father.
