As Japan’s young people flock to the cities to seek their fortunes, the countryside is increasingly depopulated. Those who remain in the villages tend to spurn the quite different values of post-war Japan, wealthy and westernised. In one such village, a mentally retarded high school student, Yoshiichi, hangs himself. A bit of a thief he seemed a happy enough boy. Why did he kill himself then? The question is of little interest to the villagers, except one, Yoschiichi’s teacher.
