Making a spectacular debut with his first short film Eleven in Venice International Film Festival for short film competition, he also got attraction from every international film festival for his first long film Tang Shi (2004) by calmly describing life of a mid-aged male pickpocket with hand tremor. He then continuously released high-quality movies, and rose to the rank of the world-class cineaste with the endless invitations and awards from great international film festivals. Director Zhang Lu awarded ACID prize in the 58th Cannes International Film Festival Critics Week in 2005, for his movie Grain in Ear.
