En 1966, il va étudier à Hong-Kong. Il part ensuite aux U.S.A. et étudie à la section Radio-TV-Films de l’Université du Texas d’où il sort diplômé en 1975. Il retourne à Hong Kong en 1977 et commence à travailler comme directeur de la production à la télévision. Il tourne son premier long métrage en 1979.
